The name of the now legendary Tenuta San Guido flagship wine “Sassicaia” is derived from the Italian for the word “stone” (“sasso”) and indeed the vineyards from which the grapes destined to become this wine were drawn, are notably stony. Drawing comparisons with the gravelly soils of “Graves” in Bordeaux, it should perhaps be no surprise that the grape varieties of Bordeaux might thrive in Bolgheri, yet you would of course need a pioneer or genius to plant Bordeaux grapes in a region where previously Sangiovese had ruled supreme.

Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc in the 2011 vintage (a blend that has endured since the 1994 vintage) this “Sassicaia” saw fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, prior to being matured in French oak “barriques” for  two years. Bottled thereafter, this 2011 “Sassicaia” was then held back at the Tenuta San Guido cellar for a further 6 months ahead of commercial release.
